During your stay in Lhasa you will meet many friendly Tibetans, often whole families, who come from far away corners of the country to visit their holy city. The route then leads westward across the Tibetan Plateau, stopping at historic Gyantse and Xighatse, famous for Tashilhunpo, seat of the Panchen Lama. During your drive (and frequent stops) you will see the turquoise lake Yamdrok Tso, cross high passes with views of the high Himalayas and see much of rural Tibet. The route back to the border with Nepal leads through the spectacular gorge of the Bhote Kosi, passing through a gap in the Himalayas.
